High Water Mark For Wal-Mart?
Has Wal-Mart reached the height of its business?
Let me regress.
Back in the eighties AT&T decided to extend health benefits to employees
significant others (Gay and Lesbian partners). Christian groups called for
a boycott of AT&T. From that point on AT&T went into a tailspin. They
had many transformation and each ended with the company worse off.
The company spiraled down. The great and mighty Ma bell has finally
ended up being bought recently by a baby bell.
In the nineties K mart bought a book store chain. If my memory serves
me correctly the chain was border books. Anyway this chain as a business
practice sold pornography. When this was brought to K mart's attention,
their reply was "Yeah we know, and they will continue to do so".
Thousands of Christians boycotted K mart. During this time a new
retailer was gaining traction across the country, Wal-Mart.
K mart began to suffer. They finally after a few years came to their senses
sold the book chain, and renounced the pornography. To late, the market
had moved on, Wal-Mart had captured their market share, K mart
bankrupted and now they are part of Sears Holding. They have yet to
recover.
Disney appointed Micheal Eisner as CEO almost fifteen years ago. Eisner
at the time was reported to be serving on a board of a Gay Lesbian
organization. Disney under his control began producing and making R
rated films, and pornography movies. Christian groups called for a
boycott of Disney. Disney profits began to suffer. The company
struggled. Yet they arrogantly stay the course that Eisner had charted.
Disney's aloofness peaked with a Gay Day every June at Disney World in
Florida. Eisner was recently forced from the company by Roy Disney and
disgruntled share holders.
Wal-Mart recently has agreed to join a national Gay and Lesbian Chamber
of Commerce, citing that this small segment of the population is an
important part of their business.
So has Wal-Mart hit its retail high water mark?
I really don't know the answer. But the writing could be on the wall. Like
every business, it will reach a high point. Some will say, there is no
business that can even challenge Wal-Mart at this time. In retail circles
Dollar General Stores are being whispered as the giant killer. You can find
several Dollar General Stores in most communities. But I think the fate
of Wal-Mart now lies in the hands of Christians. If Christians decide to
boycott Wal-Mart, then Wal-Mart will suffer like the businesses above.
Since I wrote the Article the following has come to pass.
11/09/2006 Wal Mart contributes Sale Proceeds to Gay & Lesbian Group (AFA.net)
11/21/2006 Wal Mart decides not to take sides in controversial issues and not to
support controversial groups, organizations and or movements.
