“THE PAIN OF GUILT!”
At the age of 15, Robert Garth hit an elderly man on the head to
steal money for an athletic uniform. He didn’t intend to kill him, but
the blow proved to be fatal. The police had no clues. Garth knew that
it was very unlikely that he would be caught, yet he was miserable.
Finally, after 15 years of mental anguish, he confessed to the police.
He was tried, convicted and given a relatively light sentence. In
prison he accepted Christ as his Savior. Some people said his
sentence was too lenient. Garth’s reply was this: “I’ve been
incarcerated in a cell for 6 months. I’ve been incarcerated in my mind
for 15 years. There is no comparison. The mind is far worse.”
There are no words adequate to describe the torture of a guilty
conscience! We can see this in the story of Joseph and his brothers in
the Old Testament. Years after they had sold their brother into
slavery and lied to their father, telling him that Joseph had been
killed, the sons of Jacob entered Egypt to buy food, not knowing that
the man who controlled the grain market was their younger brother
Joseph. Joseph hid his identity from his brothers as they sought to
buy food. To test them, Joseph accused them of being spies, and they
immediately associated their misfortune with their sinful deed. It was
evident that the guilt of their sinful deed had haunted them through
the years.
How bless to know that there is deliverance from the awful pangs of
guilt. We must acknowledge our sin to God and receive Jesus as our
Lord and Savior. We must also confess our sin to those we’ve
wronged, witness to them about our faith, and do what we can to make
things right. Taking these steps will bring inner peace and spare us
the needless torture of a guilty conscience. Psalm 32:1 says,
“Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.”
